This pond is just down the hill from my house, and this view is from Rte 52 here in Northport. Here are the steps I took to make this painting:
.
First I did a quick "under painting" in burnt sienna. Next, I put in some darks with Prussian blue. This preliminary process establishes the general tone of the painting and gives overall integrity to the painting.
.
Next, I loosely laid in the cool cobalt blue sky and lake, contrasted with the alizarin crimson and cadmium reds, orange, and yellow of the fall foliage, of the distant hills and the field in the foreground. I then used complementary blues to tone down colors, mixing right on the canvas to get my greens and browns, reducing the value or intensity on the hills in and distance for a fairly realistic impression of the changing colors of Autumn here on the coast of Maine.
Finally I added details of white pine and spruce trees scattered through the oak, maple and birch trees, and softened the sky . Lastly, I added grasses in the foreground which added to the illusion of distance and depth in the painting. This is a very strong painting and will easily stand on its own despite it's relatively small size, or hold it's own in any grouping.
